Nils van Kleef is a master’s student from the University of Twente in The Netherlands, where he is currently obtaining his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Human Media Interaction. He previously obtained his BSc in Technical Informatics (Computer Science) at the same university.
Project
His interest is in both combining Business & IT and Human Computer Interaction, the second part which he decided to do research in, both in his master’s programme and with his research in Kyoto. He is staying at the Nishida Lab, from November 15th 2011 to March 15th 2012. There he is doing research on human behaviour and how an immersive environment can help study human social behavior, in a queuing situation.
This YouTube video shows one of the experiments he carried out at the Nishida Lab. It shows a social experiment that uses a virtual world shown by the immersive display. It consists of 2 scenarios. In scenario 1, robots line up to form queues in front of three shops. In scenario 2, robots rush to the front of the shop. In both scenario’s, the participant is asked to interact with the shopkeeper. I observe what happens, and the participants fill in a questionnaire afterwards. In most cases the participant queue up nicely, but in some cases they cut the line.
This .pdf-file contains the final report Nils van Kleef has written about his internship after he was back in the Netherlands. It sums up the work he did and guides you through the process. It shows an insight into his thoughts, choices he made and issues he came upon during his project.
