2016 seminar

Conversational Informatics, Cognitive System

We conduct an integrated study on the analysis and synthesis of interactions among people and artifacts, aiming at modeling, designing, implementing, and evaluating intelligent interactive systems that can help people and the society.  In this practical training seminar, students are invited to address following mini-projects.

(1) Analysis of eye tracking data, Designing and programming gaze interface
Using Tobii EyeX (Tobii technology inc.), analyze the gaze data for displayed stimulus or design and make gaze interfaces. In the gaze analysis, program the data capture software using Tobii EyeX API and generate heat-map representation, and perform experiments. In designing gaze interface, make a software that control using gaze data. Students can choose preferred topic either analysis or making interfaces.

(2) Design, Analysis and Evaluation of an interaction system
Participants improve or modify a part of an existing interaction system using a game development system (Unity). After that, they conduct an experiment for learning a basic method to analyze and evaluate interaction data. In the experiment, they will measure objective data, such as physiological indices and behavioral data, in order to evaluate their hypothesis. Participants can develop a system including interaction humanoid robot systems (NAO and ROBOVIE), a robot arm system, an immersive collaborative interaction environment (ICIE), a physiological indices measurement systems (Polymate) and a portable NIRS system (HOT-1000) if they want.
Schedule
Students will work on the above mini-projects according to the following schedule:
1. Lecture on basic issues and task assignment.
2-4. Work on individual mini-projects.
5. Interim reports and presentations.
6-7. Work on individual mini-project.
8. Final reports and presentations.
Capacity
Up to around 6 students.
